http://www.nation.co.ke Farmers in Ngongu village in Tharaka-Nithi County are counting losses running into millions of shillings after more than 100 acres of coffee, banana and tea farms were destroyed by fire. The fire started at around 4pm on Saturday and is suspected to have been started by arsonists. Residents put out the inferno that was intensified by windy weather for more than five hours using water and soil. A family was also rendered homeless after their timber house was demolished to prevent it from catching fire. Mr Moses Miriti who lost more than two acres of tea plantation described the loss as big saying he had had invested more Sh200,000 in the farm. Weru Tea Factory director Francis Kamundi said the factory is likely unable to meet it production target because of the anticipated lower harvests.
