Mid-winter is peak CITRUS season at the farmers' market when you may find a wide variety available depending on your location. Citrus is a common term and genus (Citrus) of flowering plants in the rue family, Rutaceae. Citrus is believed to have originated in the part of Southeast Asia bordered by Northeastern India, Myanmar (Burma) and the Yunnan province of China. According to UN 2007 data, Brazil, China, the United States, Mexico, India, Spain and Pakistan are the world's largest citrus-producing countries. In the US, Florida is the top producer of juice oranges, while California's production is primarily for table fruit. Amber Smith with LNC Smith Farms in Exeter, California spoke with us from the Los Osos Monday afternoon farmers' market about the various varieties available this time of year.
