Health authorities in Japan's Miyazaki Prefecture say they have confirmed the H5 strain of bird flu in chickens from a local poultry farm. They conducted genetic tests after 29 chickens were found dead on the farm on Sunday and Monday. They found the toxic strain of avian flu in 3 of 5 samples. They began culling about 4,000 birds at the farm in Nobeoka City early on Tuesday. The officials said they plan to complete the cull within 5 hours and bury the chickens nearby. Prefectural authorities have imposed precautionary shipment bans on chicken and eggs from 2 nearby farms. Authorities in Miyazaki Prefecture are stepping up measures to prevent further outbreaks of bird flu after the virus was detected in the area. The local government officials plan to lay mats soaked with disinfectant at 8 points within a 10-kilometer radius of the site of the outbreak. They plan to apply the measures around the clock for the time being. http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/english/news/20141216_10.html
