Dutch Bucket Hydroponic Tomatoes - Lessons Learned and a New Crop
It's time to start a new crop of hydroponic tomatoes in the dutch buckets. But first, I need to look back at what was learned from the last crop. I noticed a bit of algae in the bottom of the buckets, so I now have them covered with black plastic. The paint strainers are fine to use again. The perlite is being re-used and is showing no signs of problems. I give tips about where to get buckets and the grommets, and show my newest system. All together, I have 40 tomatoes going in 3 different systems, and working just great. If you have questions about what fertilizer I use, all of the answers are in the following video : http://youtu.be/vYv9iu2NI3M Dutch bucket hydroponics is not the least bit complicated. So if you're struggling with growing tomatoes, don't have a garden, or just don't have much time, give it a try. I think you'll like the results. http://www.facebook.com/mhp.gardener

To complete the setup, you need the to trellis the plants with roller hooks and tomato clips. I grow like this every year and always have a huge harvest.

I have done a hybrid Dutch bucket this past summer. Basically, I did used limes stone in the buckets to weight them down and large net pots. The water pump pumped up the water and it drained back into the reservoir. I did not use screen/ filter media nor pearlite.

Can you transplant a small tomato grown in soil to this system? I'm wondering about how the roots develop in each medium and if they differ to the point that it would not adjust to the change, or is that not a problem? If it is particular, then what is the best way to obtain the starting tomato plants with roots? Grow them from seed in a soil less propagator, or taking clones and growing roots (but that is harder, I bet)?
