In preparing the pond for the ducks and fish, the pond should ideally be emptied and then dried. After drying, the pond should be cleaned. Damages, if any, should be repaired and the coming and going of water should be supervised. For the water, there should be an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe. After that, lime and dung should be put in the pond and then water should be filled. We then use chemicals such as urea and superphosphate. Then we put the fingerlings into the pond, we give them food everyday, we check the quality of the water and with a net, we keep checking the fish. In the preparation of the pond, all these steps are crucial. To prevent the fish from contracting any diseases, we have to maintain the quality of the water. It is important to aerate the water and remove a bit of it everyday. If the fish do become sick, we do not use antibiotics as this is harmful for the people eating the fish. So we prevent diseases by water management only. Per hectare, it costs around 60,000 rupees to feed the fish. The poor farmers of our country do not have enough money to pay that much for feeding the fish. That is why, if one rears ducks along with fish, one is not required to feed the fish form outside. By doing this, farmers can also make an added profit of 60,000 to 70,000 rupees. The fish grow as well as they would have had we fed them. The fish derive all the nutrition they require from the excreta of the ducks and the food given to the ducks. We have been rearing fish and ducks for the past 8 years and we obtain more than 6,000 kilograms per hectare per year. We keep approximately 300-700 ducks. Rearing ducks and fish together is very good. Ducks, by swimming in the pond, help in the aeration of the pond. The mangoor fish is a very good fish. So far in our country, only carp fish are being cultivated, but it is necessary to diversify the species of fish in India. Mangoor fish should be cultivated because they have a high demand in the market. People also obtain a lot of nutrition form these fish. It is a very famous fish in our country and it has few bones. It is, thus, important for us to rear mangoor fish. We are now in a position to obtain fish eggs, breed them and play a role in conserving the species.
