This is a recent tune from Jackson Holly's pen ... and he says it is "based on a true story". It's a bit happy, a bit sad and a bit nostalgic ... and decidedly life affirming. DO AS THOU WILT I remember when I turned eighteen, I signed up with Uncle Sam He wanted me to fight for him, way over in Vietnam. But I got a school deferment, a high number in the lottery And set about my education, and set my young soul free. I met a sweet Southern Belle, I loved her and she loved me We were art students at the college, as happy as we could be Smoked dope and followed the Grateful Dead, we made quiet a team Lookin' for God in all the wrong places .... lost in a hippie dream. We traveled all around the South, all the places near Alabam' Atlanta, Memphis, Jacksonville, and of course good ol' Birmingham I recall that summer on Mobile Bay campin' out on the beach in June Stars fell on Alabama, and we fell into the moon. Eight weeks later she told me, there was a baby on the way My heart flipped and my head exploded, I didn't know what to say But she said the baby had to go, she wasn't ready to be a Mom We agreed Jackson Holly Junior was .... an inconvenient bum. Now I'm turnin' sixty-five, I don't even remember her name And nothin' can bring him back to me and there's no one else to blame. Today he would be forty-five, with teenagers of his own Startin' high school in the fall, hangin' out on Grandpa's farm. There's nothin' I can do or say, to fix the wrongs I've done Only God can save a soul change the setting of the sun I can only ask forgiveness, and just live with the guilt I believed Satan's credo .... "do what thou wilt". ©Jackson Holly, 2014
