The traditional method for cultivating rice is manual transplanting of 25 days old seedling after intensive tillage in presence of ponded water in the field called puddling. This method is both expensive, labor intensive and water consuming. With the depleting ground water tables as well as labor and energy shortage coupled with growing uncertainty of rainfall, the rice production in the Indo-Gangetic plains is becoming challenging. Adoption of direct seeding of rice (DSR) technique turns vital to address these challenges. Emphasis on scaling this technology having multiple benefits is highlighted in this video.
