Nerdmom920 is correct. Furunu of japan employs azolla is the green manure and uses ducks to weed & eat insects from the field. The polyculture synergistically enhances output. This can be combined with the SRi method, developed by the late Pere Henri Luanie which uses one third less water.

Actually, if you use the Fukuoka method in which a green manure crop is used to suppress weeds, you can produce a comparable amount of rice as produced in conventional fields. You could grow fava beans in the off season, sew your rice in the mature favas, "chop and drop the fava's" and in a month see your rice grow up through the compost favas. Read, "One Straw Revolution" you can get off the pesticide/herbicide cycle.
