Your Healing Place - http://www.yourhealingplace.com - 303.636.0000 Healing With Acupuncture with Dr. Mark Carney: Acupuncture & Back Pain Hi, I'm Dr. Mark Carney. I'm a naturopathic doctor and an acupuncturist with a family practice in Denver, Colorado called Your Healing Place. People often ask, "What is acupuncture?" Acupuncture is one part of Chinese medicine. Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years. Acupuncture is based on the concept of Qi and Qi means energy. The Qi is flowing through our body in rivers that are called meridians in Chinese medicine, and these meridians are mapped out all throughout our body. They flow on the top of our head, on the bottom of our feet. Basically, what acupuncture is doing is inserting needles at different points of these meridians to flip open and closed valves to regulate the flow of the energy, of the Qi. Just like rivers out in nature, if a tree falls down and blocks that river, things that depend on that water that are downstream from that would start to get impaired function because they're not getting the water supply. So things that are downstream from the blockages of Qi in our body also get an impairment in function. Acupuncture Keeps the Rivers of Energy Open If the rivers of energy that are flowing to our eyes get impaired flow, then we can get macular degeneration or blurred vision, or if the rivers that flow to our head get impaired, then we can get depression, anxiety or insomnia. So that's acupuncture. Let's talk about back pain. Back pain is one of the most common reasons that a person goes in to see a healthcare professional. Back pain can be debilitating. To understand back pain, we need to understand the anatomy of the back. We can look at the musculature and find out which muscles are in spasm. We could also look at the spinal segments and determine if there are any problems there, such as disc-related issues, herniation, bulging of the disc, etc. To an acupuncturist, however, it's much more important that we know the location of where the back pain is occurring. From that location, we can determine which meridians and which acupuncture points should be used to balance out the problem. We find that it's important that our patients who have back pain get evaluated properly and get the appropriate x-rays and MRIs as needed. I've helped many people who have back pain to reduce their pain and prevent future pain from occurring. In some patients, they notice relief almost immediately, within the first minute of the first needle being inserted. One of my patients reported a 10 out of 10 back pain before coming in, and it dropped to a 1 out of 10 at the end of her session. If you or a loved one is suffering from this condition, then I strongly encourage you to contact our office because we have had amazing success helping people who have this condition.
