With an increase of 75.16% area under cotton cultivation this season, upper Rajasthan, mainly the Sriganganagar circle, has made a record of sorts in changing the agriculture profile of the region, by shifting from traditional crops to "white gold'' this year. In the traditional cotton growing northern region, consisting of southern Punjab, Haryana and parts of Rajasthan, it's north Rajasthan which has registered maximum shift, beating Punjab, Haryana and lower Rajasthan area. Overall, area under cotton has gone up by 32.57% this year in the northern region. Last year, both Punjab and Haryana had witnessed unprecedented hike in prices fetched by cotton crop, which explains the farmers' preference for the crop this year. Against the maximum support price of Rs 2,850 per quintal for cotton, physical business in cotton took place at Rs 5,000-Rs 5,500 last season in southern Malwa region of Punjab, which is the biggest contributor of cotton crop from northern India. This was revealed in a survey of northern region conducted by Corporate Raw Materials Department of SEL Manufacturing Ltd . SEL is a member of Northern Indian Textile Manufacturing Association (NITMA) and Northern India Cotton Association. The survey found that most farmers of Sriganganagar circle in Rajasthan have brought almost all their agriculture land under cotton cultivation this season. Except upper Rajasthan and a small portion of Haryana, most farmers have sown Bt and hybrid seeds of the crop this year. The survey anticipates 57.75 lakh cotton bales production in northern India this season, 14.25 lakh bales more than previous year's production. Last year, northern India cotton circle produced 43.50 lakh bales with average yield of 608 kg per hectare against world average of 763 kg per hec.
