Colombian model in China arrested for alleged drug trafficking - TomoNews
GUANGZHOU, CHINA — A young Colombian TV personality, footballer, model and former beauty pageant winner has been arrested in China, accused of attempting to smuggle drugs into the country. Bound for China, 22-year-old Juliana Lopez had flown from Colombia around two weeks ago. Her family last heard from her during a layover in Paris. On July 18th she was arrested at Guangzhou airport. Airport officials found an unspecified amount of narcotics hidden inside a laptop, Colombia's El Tiempo newspaper reports. Lopez reportedly told friends and family she was in China to buy goods such as handbags and women's accessories to take back to Colombia to sell in her small boutique. "My heart tells me she is not guilty," Lopez's friend Lis Hernandez told Colombia's El Tiempo newspaper. "You cannot condemn it yet, I have hope that he is innocent and everything is clear." For drug trafficking offences, China imposes heavy penalties including lengthy prison terms and death.
