Dr Jeff Neilson has been conducting research on the economic geography of the Indonesian coffee industry since 2001. This video follows his field research on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, where an action-research activity has been undertaken to improve the rural livelihoods of coffee farmers through interventions along the value chain. This research was funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). This video was made by Febriansyah Marcel with funding support from ACIAR. Darn excellent random playlist find! First off, thank you ACIAR and University of Sydney. Some Indonesians would feel/say that Australia have an agenda behind all this. However, for me, as long as the farmers could have a way to improve their lives, perhaps even one day live a life more akin to the lives of the people on the other end of the business e.g. roasters and drinkers, then it's all good. Secondly, I really hope this sort of programs are not short-lived but a partnership for "life" that will lead to a sweeter life for the farmers, greater beans for the roasters, more satisfying brews for the drinkers, and of course a more sustainable economy and way of life. And yes, the push for local designation/appellation thing is long overdue. About time. Good on ya, mates!
