The fourth episode of Smart Agriculture, Farm Mechanization disabuses the notion that farm labour is plentiful. Farmers across the country cite wages as the principal item of cost. Not only can they not afford to pay like factory employers or construction contractors; farm labour is unavailable when most needed during sowing and harvesting because of a bunching of demand. Mechanisation used to be about churning the earth. A twist in the episode is conservation agriculture, which is catching on as a response to climate change and short supply of labour. It relies on machines to leave the soil undisturbed through no-tillage farming.
