CAMPBELL RIVER - After more than a decade of planning, an aquaculture operation north of Campbell River is preparing to launch the world's first marine-based closed-containment fish farm. Workers employed by Vancouver based AgriMarine Industries are putting the finishing touches on a 3,000 cubic metre tank located in Middle Bay. The tank is one of four which will eventually be located in the bay. Company Vice President Robert Walker says the company has had success with a similar setup in China but it's not salt-water based. Walker says once they have compiled data on their first cycle of fish they hope they'll be able to demonstrate that fish can be grown economically and competitively. Staff hope to place 50,000 Chinook Salmon fry into the tank within the next ten days and will then begin gathering data on the fish as they take 16-18 months to mature.
