In the ongoing wave of pronouncements coming from Russia and China after Chinese leader Xi Jinping's visit last week, a major agreement has been reached on the price of gas. Russian gas giant Gazprom has agreed on gas prices for supplies shipped to China through an eastern pipeline. The 30-year deal will begin in 2018 and will pump around 38 billion cubic meters of gas a year. But that number could go as high as 60 billion. The agreement has been a long road. For fifteen years, the two sides had been unable to agree upon a price. The deal could see China surpass Germany as the largest importer of Russian gas.
