On iTravel’s 2nd unforgettable day in Chiang Rai we visited a lush tea plantation in the mist-shrouded hills of Doi Mae Salong; this vast plantation is a popular tourist attraction as well as a breath-taking beauty spot and a fully functioning estate which produces 3 different types of tea. The iTravel gang were lucky enough to be given a private guided tour by the charming and very generous plantation owner; she even allowed us to get to get a behind-the-scenes look at how the tea is packed and prepared, and we had an enjoyable hands-on experience helping load and weigh the dried tea – before enjoying a delicious sample of the end result! Next on the itinerary was a vibrant Chinese village with many hill tribe residents; it was fascinating to mingle with the local people and examine the various items for sale in their colourful stalls. As well as stocking up on almonds, the iTravel explorers got to celebrate Kirby’s birthday by sampling some delicious wines poured by a kindly shop-owner. Last but certainly not least, iTravel headed to the lush mountain slopes of Doi Tung where we got to see the Royal Villa, the last residence of the Princess Mother, and explored the beautiful temperate flower gardens of Mae Fah Luang. These truly stunning gardens are a riot of colour and life, and serve as the perfect spot for scenic strolls or peaceful contemplation with a cup of good coffee in your hand. We had a blast on our second day exploring the wonders of Chiang Rai; stay tuned for what happened on Day 3 of our Chiang Rai adventure, as Simon becomes mahout for a day and the iTravel team get to see even more of this breath-taking region of northern Thailand.
