Capsule hotel, ancient city: sleeping in a Kyoto pod for $40
In the late ‘70s, Metabolist architect Kisho Kurokawa (designer of the Nakagin capsule tower) dreamt up “a hotel for 2001”. The idea was to do away with rooms and implement simple crawl spaces for sleeping. Today the capsule hotel concept is well-known in Japan. Originally popularized by businesspeople who missed the last train, these sleeping pods have been given a sleeker makeover. Located near Kyoto’s Gion (the traditional geisha district), 9 Hours has re-developed the capsule concept befitting the iPhone generation: the pods are minimal, functional and easy to use (thanks to the icons on the walls and floors). The *faircompanies family spent a night in these affordable ($40/night) pods and found these sleep crawl spaces (220 cm long by 108 cm wide and high) surprisingly spacious (even for sharing with a toddler). capsule hotel would be a good cheap choice for 1 person at$40, but if there's more than 2 people, you might as well go for a regular cheap 2 star hotel as it would be cheaper than $120.

Love it, the Japanese perfection again ... and people worried about children have never been to Japan, the safest country on the planet.
-
It's basically a youth hostel - the main problem is noise and light insulation from other residents coming in late at night. If everyone would be in bed by 11 then why not?

in before someone comes in, falls asleep next to you and snore like HELL
-
that is cool

this is cool!

I don't get why they keep trying to tell the kids to be quite when in the sleeping room and then the two adults keep talking, commenting and asking questions in a normal voice.
-
are they $40 per night per person? If so then wouldn't it be cheaper to get an hotel room if you have even just one child?
-
Now if a blind businessman came to use this, will they have an accommodation where someone comes through with them? Since you're only using a light for an alarm? They may not see that. Or if someone is a heavy sleeper they may not notice that.
-
For some reason, I don't want to do this with kids. Unless they can stay in the same pods.

-
This is so cool. Well done.
-
There's no way I'd let my child sleep there and someone easily have access to them sleeping while I'm also asleep
-
So does that handsome white haired guy come with this hotel also ? ;D

don't want to hear our smell people's nasty fart but, also kids pee in there sleep, that mats not soak proof, people snore so sound in general, a security risk is also a huge concern to me even to the mom in this video clearly ended up sleeping with her son. it's a different country people from USA are usually carrying so I would assume it's a hot spot for crime. this is a no to me.
