There's a lot more to Sierra Leone for tourists than the beaches of the Freetown peninsula. Rotifunk, seat of Bumpeh Chiefdom is only 40 miles southeast of Freetown. But it's a world away in terms of scenic beauty and traditional culture. As Sierra Leone's rice bowl, traditional village life and rice farming in the chiefdom continue much as they have for hundreds of years. View a trip down the scenic Bumpeh River through the tropical lowland rain forest of Bumpeh Chiefdom from Rotifunk to the coast. This is a chance to see the "real" Sierra Leone, with villages too small to be marked on most maps -- where river travel is still the most practical (or only) means of transportation. Traditional life goes on as it always has. For African Americans, it's a land and lifestyle representative of what their ancestors experienced before bringing their rice growing skills to the New World.
