Aquaponics Walkthrough Episode 8 - Which Plants Grow Best?
In this video I will walkthrough some of the growth in the aquaponics garden and discuss which plants have been growing and producing the best for me. The current pH in the system is still at 8.2 which is much higher than it should be for good growth for most plants. However, I have had great growth still and will be planting more of what works until I come up with a solution to the grow media problems. Thanks for watching! coconut fiber laid down in pvc cut in half is a good soil medium

I don't know much about aquaponics, but would it be possible to add a little limestone to the media to bring down the Ph a little for plants like the tomatoes to grow more optimally?

I use to have two aerogardens. I considered going back to aerogardens since it's so hot in Texas and then I discovered aquaponics. If you look at the seeds they sell (see link below), you would think the following herbs would do well: dill, curled parsley, Genovese basil, chives, thyme, mint, thai basil, oregano, savory, and Italian parsley. The lettuce seed pods they sell are black seeded simpson, deer tongue and paris island lettuce. Anyway, when I finish building my system, I am seriously thinking to buy their cherry tomatoe seed pods and then saving the seeds from then on. It would be nice to be able to swap seeds with others. By the way, I have heard that kale does really well. http://www.aerogarden.com/seed-kits.html.

Did you glue your pvc connections near the grow beds?

Driftwood will lover your PH eventually, slowly, and the best way to add the driftwood is in the fish tank or a sump tank

I can grow potatoes by setting them in the window waiting for them to sprout then wrapping them in paper towels and soaking them in water wet paper is a really good alternative to soil

I don't know if it would be the same in aquaponics but peas need Phosphorus to flower and fruit

Being inside, what are you using to pollinate?

Hi! I have a nice aquaponics system and i jave found that when your leaves start getting yellow, it means that the system is lacking iron, look for it and you will see your system green again, there is little iron on aquaponics systems. You may also try adding worms to the system.
-
Do you have to pollinate the flowering plants. I'm new and having a lot of difficulty. I'd appreciate your help.

great video man. thnx for sharing. I was wondering about jiaogulan how it might grow with aquaponics.
-
How did you make your lighting particularly the hood?
-
If you uproot your tomato plant, trim the roots, and then replant it in the same spot it may not grow so tall.

what kind of rocks ae those?

I'd highly suggest switching to Expanded Shale. Check out http://www.bigelowbrook.com/Products/Shale/ExpandedShale.aspx

You need to blend the excess lettuce into a gross but extremely healthy shake and just gulp that sucker down.

Yellow leaves can be a sign of low iron levels in the plants, in aquaponics systems iron has to be added manually, as the fish will not provide iron for the plants, so you will have to add it in powder form, check it out and research it before you take my work for it.

If you raise tilapia or catfish, give them all that lettuce (I am not sure that catfish will eat lettuce, but most likely if hungry, they will), cut it up and give it to them as food, they will love it and you will save on fish food also.
