An American species of cockroach is being raised by Chinese farmers, and sold at a huge profit to cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies. Wang Fuming, a farmer in east China's Shandong Province, is raking in a dream fortune from the small, much-loathed critter. "I can earn at least one million yuan annually by cockroach farming," said Wang. Wang said he is a happy man these days raising cockroaches. It is a low maintenance job with a high profit margin. He said for every 3.25 US dollars you invest, you can expect to make 11. Wang's farms, the biggest in the country, are now home to about 20 million cockroaches. He expects the number to double in the coming winter, as the critters breed to keep warm. The cockroach is adored mostly for its protein and cellulose-like substance. And the list of claimed medicinal and aesthetic benefits goes on and on. Fried cockroach is a must-have for the Wang family. "My dream is to mass market the critter which has various medical functions. I want the world to know about every good thing cockroach offers," said Wang. Wang said cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies are his biggest clients. The price for exoskeletons has gone up ten times since he started his business three years ago. According to reports, there are about 100 cockroach farms in China right now. But more and more are popping up fast, just as fast as the cockroaches breed. Wang said he will be okay as long as the little insects don't scurry away. Authorities do not meddle with the somewhat "secret trade" at least not until the cockroaches start bugging nearby residents.
