Today four bears who have been on biles farms for a total of 40 years left their cages behind. They are on our rescue truck, headed for the safety of our sanctuary - some 1,200kms away. In every sense theirs is a long journey and the next few days will be just the start. Hopefully all will arrive safely, then work will start rehabilitating these poor bears and helping them build new lives and we desperately need your help for that. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Imagine those first few steps. The steps taken here by Dau Phu. Ten years in that cage. In that time he surely must have come to expect nothing but cruelty from humans. That cage was his life. His sad, painful, tragic life. And then today - years after he ever could have hoped for anything better - new people arrive that he hasn’t seen before. They push another cage right up to his own and try to get him to enter. What if it was you? Would you you take your chance and run in because surely anything must be better? That’s what his fellow bears Jarai, Su Su and Binh Minh did today. Or like Dau Phu, do you take your time? Perhaps he had no concept of what better could be. What is extraordinary is that on our sanctuaries, bears hop in and out of transport cages all the time. For health checks or a change of enclosure. Like Dau Phu they take that leap of faith and learn to trust again. Dau Phu is headed home – where he’ll learn there is something better. Quarantine will be better. Then his first den will be better. His first friend. His first day in the sunshine. His first swim in the pool. Life will get better and better for Dau Phu and you did that. You made it happen. Dau Phu will set his own pace - just as he did today - but now thousands are cheering him on. Get home soon Dau Phu. Get well soon. Get happy soon. We love you.
