There are definitely people in Tokyo who do this all year round in order to support their families. I couldn't imagine having to do this if I had those kinds of responsibilities as well. Big salutes to all you hard workers out there, winning bread for your loved ones! Remember, always stay positive! Challenges in life only make you stronger, and right now I'm levelling up on the daily! Edit: I've relinquished licensing responsibility to these lovely fellows. Partly because I don't have the time to respond to emails right now, but mostly because I'm a fat corporate cog in the machine, man. if this goes on year around, that's a miserebla existance. In the Us it's also brutal, without paid vacations. a complete absurd. in 2012 I met a guy who told me his last vacation for an entire month was in 1992, when he finished high school. for 20 years he never had another vacation, even unpaid, for more than a week. it's not worth living like that. funny think I spoke to my mom's maid in Brazil in 12/20 and she told me she was on her tentyeth day of PAID vacations, and 10 more were yet to come. and we think we're rich and live in a first world country... lol... poor us.

Don't do it. Just don't. I had a job like this for many years (I was very, very stupid then). I was living in Washington, D.C., and reporting to an office in London. I managed the entire world (except North and South America) for this company. Yes, I know. I didn't do ANYTHING in my time zone. Anyway, I was asked on a Monday if I could handle a trade show in Berlin because a co-worker got sick. I said "sure," as if I had a choice. I spent all day on Monday making plans (airline reservations, hotel accommodations, drivers from the airport, etc.). On Sunday morning, I left Washington and flew to Frankfurt, had a three hour layover, and then flew to Berlin. When I FINALLY got to my hotel room on Sunday, my cell phone rang. It was from the CEO. Fuck! I answered it. He said "I want to know why you haven't answered the e-mail that I sent to you on Thursday..." "Well," I said, "Thursday is something that we Americans call 'Thanksgiving', and Friday is the day when we recover from eating too much. Saturday and Sunday is something called the 'weekend' when we don't work. Oh! But I WAS on a fucking airplane for 8 hours on Sunday (a non-workday) to get to fucking Berlin so that I could run the company's business here. I just arrived, and am exhausted and now you're calling me because I didn't answer a fucking e-mail you sent to me on a holiday weekend? Fuck you. I'm done. Know what? I'm MUCH happier now that I quit that job. Sure, I'm making 1/5 the amount of money...but I've learned the hard way that money's not really important. I'm now doing something that I enjoy...and I'm much happier, healthier, and well-balanced. If I could advise my younger self, if would be to tell him that pursuing money will kill you. Money is not very important (yes, of course, we need money to live...but this doesn't have to cost us our souls). Find something that you LOVE to do. Then, figure out how to earn money from that. You (my younger self) will be much more pleased...

This is how your car or television were made.

For people who know better, the same company elsewhere in the world would work the same if not longer hours. So this is not strictly Japan, same line of work in NY would be even worst.
-
Man i wish i had such an easy life like this.
