Transcription: Cypress is an unincorporated community of Harris County located completely inside the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the City of Houston. The Cypress area is located along Highway 290 approximately twenty-five miles northwest of Downtown Houston and was once part of an immense prairie plain. Cypress Top, as it was originally called, was originally settled by the Atakapa & Akokisa Indians. German settlers began moving into the Cypress Creek area in the 1850’s and hence the street names Huffmeister, Telge & Matzke. For about a century the area was dominated by two large ranches to the South and West of Cypress Top and dairy and rice farms which dotted the wooded areas North of Highway 290 from Jersey Village to Fairfield up to Highway 249. The arrival of the railroad in July of 1856 promoted tremendous growth in the area. A commercial center sprang up around the train depot and included the historic buildings now on display in the Cypress Top Historic Park. It is believed that Sam Houston and the Texian army camped out in the area of what is now Ravensway not long before the Battle of San Jacinto Large scale residential development since the 1980s has transformed the area from a sleepy rural town into a vibrant suburban community of Houston. In addition to Cypress Top Station, Cypress was also known for the Hot Wells Hotel and Mineral Baths which was one of two hot springs in Texas where people sought relief from various ailments The Hot Wells Hotel closed in the 1950s when the building burned down. The site is now used as a gun range. Tin Hall, one of the oldest continually operating dance halls in Texas is currently in the process of being relocated to a site near the Cypress post office.
