A Look at the World's Largest Solar Plant
Frank Sesno reports on the Ivanpah solar thermal plant, a 400 megawatt facility that uses mirrors to reflect sunlight onto energy towers instead of burning coal to make steam.

What they don't tell you is that it kills a lot of birds.

This is stupid. 140,000 homes powered from a five square mile facility that only produces power when the suns out? A nuclear power station less than half that size could power literally ten times that many homes, and wouldn't endanger any wildlife/animal habitats like solar power stations do. Nuclear power should be our country's primary power source, it won't be long until we figure out a way to safely dispose of the waste into the sun or something like that. If we can do that, nuclear power would be the closest thing to perfect.

instead of heating water in the tower and using the steam to drive turbines - heat molten salt and then use the very hot molten salt to heat water to create steam. With molten salt you can store energy like a battery does and this allows you to continue to produce electricity at times when the sun doesn't shine.

What is the cost per kwh? Thanks anyone.
-
This video did not discuss any of the technology.

"World's largest?" Do you really WANT your source of electricity to take up that much space? The Bruce Power nuclear facility in Canada can produce 6350MW in 1100 acres. Ivanpah can do 400MW in 5 sq miles. So you want to replace nuclear sites such as Bruce with this technology? You do the math.
-
Why are they not using molten salt to store the energy? It has been done in Australia.
-
Molten salt enables storage and power generation at night , why spend so much direct to steam ?
-
Make this a baseload plant which operates 24/7 with a capacity factor above 85%, then I will be impressed.
-
I like how we dump millions into fusion research and we all believe it can work someday...this plant is making power already, it certainly isnt perfect (like the first car engine or computer) and it will improve by orders of magnitude in efficiency as we learn...but it is deemed "a failure"..."too expensive"
-
Bro it's Helios One!
-
Do some research, this is an abject failure. Some of the most expensive electricity on the planet. I hate paying taxes be spent on buying votes from stupid environmentalists like this.
-
'just maybe moving the planet forward' umm no. Too bad they rely on natural gas to start the boiling process. This is Neanderthal technology masked by self affirmation and accolades from those invested in the project
-
So this shit plant lied it's ass off to get built and produces just 1/4th the power it projected, and has gotten special releases to use massive natural gas burning to drive it's turbines.
IT'S A TOTAL FUCKING FAILURE - AND A GIGANTIC CRIMINAL LIE TO GET BUILT, AS WELL AS USING BILLIONS IN TAX DOLLARS. -
Why is this more expensive than Coal. Why is wind more expensive than coal. Because Al Gore gets rich on it. That is your tax dollars. That is why.
-
Why not store the thermal heat via heating molten salt and store in a extremely high R value insulated tank? Would be able to make steam 24/7.
-
I like this idea.. Even though it looks futuristic, it is actually quite simple in concept. Just a bunch of mirrors heating up salt to create steam to drive a turbine generator. No semiconductors involved
