A Brief Stop in Da Nang, Vietnam // Dragon Bridge, Museum, and Bus SCAM!
After nearly a week in Da Lat, it was time to move onto Central Vietnam. Next stop: Da Nang! I travelled over 14 hours on buses and trains to make it to Da Nang. I took a bus from Da Lat to Nha Trang, where I stayed overnight, much to my disastifaction. Nha Trang is a Jersey-Shore-like beach town serving many Russian tourists. Essentially, it's a Russian colony. The signs and menus are in Russian. Locals will speak to Caucasians first in Russian, then in English. I don't think there's anything wrong with Russian people, but with the recent blatant aggressions towards gay people in Russia, I wasn't entirely comfortable being among them in this environment. Plus, the town has a reputation for crime and scams against tourists, which made me even more uneasy. Luckily, I was whisked away on an early morning train to Da Nang. Da Nang isn't exactly a must-see in Vietnam, but it's a modern city with a lot of accommodation and food options, as well as amenities. I didn't get a chance to enjoy some of the natural wonders around the city, but I did a little bit of exploring of the city itself. First, I went to the Museum of Cham Sculpture, which introduced to me an ancient civilization that live in this area. Then, I had dinner at My Casa, a Spanish-Italian fusion restaurant and bar recommended to me by some people I met in Da Lat. Though pricey, I enjoyed a little authentic Western food -- a welcomed change of pace from noodles and rice dishes. Then, I enjoyed the riverside at night and spent the rest of my night decompressing on the rooftop of my hostel. The next day, I worked out and packed up for my next location: Hoi An. I grab a local bus, knowing that a scam would happen from my only research. The fare collectors are notorious for upcharging foreigners, even though the 20,000 VND fare is clearly printed on the outside of the bus. I caught this scam in action and watched arguments break out between the fare collector and tourists. Luckily, since I was filming the fare collector as she approached me, she let me slide without any trouble. Coming up next: the historic town of Hoi An! Hello JP
I like you and your travel videos.
Keep up the good work and I look forward to, more of your documented travels.
One thing I would like to bring up is, currency conversion when traveling.
Yes we are all trying to save money, whilst travelling in Asia. And yes it is cheap, compared to home.
But in 3rd world countries like Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
We forget that people like us are the lucky ones, to be able to travel abroad.
They struggle to put food on the table and give their children an education, look after the sick and elderly.
The Bus scene is a matter of a few dollars $ 22.000 Dong = 1 Us Dollar
How far does 1 or 2 Dollars get you back home ?
I hope you can consider this matter of dollar and cent's whilst you are on your travels.
Try and picture it from their, EYES
For example in Cambodia, the average wage is, $ 150 US Dollars a month with 3 day's off.
Yes I agree, travellers need to be switched on and research their journey, but these are the little lessons. They are Dollars and Cents.
We all need to find out for ourselves.
Good luck to you and enjoy your travels.
