4WD, AWD, SUVs, trucks wrecking on ice compilation: no vehicle is immune to icy roads!
(No one was hurt in any of the accidents shown). I'm Dan Robinson, a storm chaser and cameraman. I've been traveling around the USA documenting and researching icy roads since 2004, and I have witnessed - and captured on camera - many accidents involving SUVs, trucks, semis, all-wheel drive vehicles, 4WD vehicles, vehicles with traction control and winter tires. No driver or vehicle can safely go highway speeds on icy roads! If you don't believe me, watch this video and decide for yourself! My hope is that you will learn from the mistakes of these drivers and SLOW DOWN to a safe speed the next time you drive on an icy road (or better yet, wait for the threat to pass). I recommend speeds LESS than 45mph on highways when snow covers a road, less than 35mph off of highways and on highway curves, hills, ramps and in heavy traffic. Speeds above 45mph on icy roads are NOT SAFE for ANY vehicle. Stay off of any steep hills when roads are icy. For freezing rain, no speeds are safe! Icy roads kill more people in the USA than all other forms of severe weather COMBINED. Learn more at http://icyroadsafety.com, a web site I built to help educate drivers. I guess they didn't get the memo about how tires, ice and the laws of physics being the same for everyone.
-
I didn't see no Audi crashing with that quattro system
-
They didn't have winter tires then
-
Most are just idiots that dont know how to drive...ill bet most of their brake pedals were through the floor.
-
No tire is good on ice. Note, when the brake lights come on the fun begins. I lived in Ohio, now Live in Madeira Beach Florida.
-
Is it me or does a lot of these seem like excessive speeds for the conditions?
-
studs and chains are great if your state allows them not sure if northern IL but they are illegal in southern IL except emergency vehicles. I just try to maintain a safe speed and distance also if road conditions are bad I do a test brake and burn out to check severity of road conditions occasionally when driving

Ships and planes are immune to icy roads, so are snow ploughs.
-
4wd and Awd help you get going from a stop, once your moving it doesn't really have any advantages, it comes down to the tires to hold the road and help you stop.
-
You have to drive like it's snowing when it's snowing... not like it's 80 outside and you on the race track... respect the snow and ice/black-ice and u will get home safely
-
isnt 4WD and AWD same thing?
-
Lesson NUMBER 1 DON'T lock your brakes.
-
the improper breaking when you start to slip was the cause of most of these wipe outs.
-
4 Wheel Dr. is a performance feature not a safety feature you need decent ice snow tires to stop and steer I prefer Michelin X ice tires they work awesome
-
putting everyone's life at risk is a jeep thing. I guess these are their second vehicles
-
Come on, pickup truck drivers; get some weight back there!
-
For those interested: note that winter tires make a big difference in cold and wet conditions storting from 7deg Celsius and below.
They're not just useful in snow and ice. -
even brand new car got Traction Control also fail.let c ya grandma car easily survive without safety feature.smart driver vs smart car😂
